What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring group of fibrous minerals. It has certain qualities (notably high strength, low reactivity and low thermal conductivity) that made it a very popular building material in the Twentieth Century. However, asbestos fibres cause a range of deadly diseases when inhaled which led to the substance being banned in the UK in 1999.

Asbestos in the Home

Provided it is undamaged and undisturbed, there is very little risk posed by asbestos. However, if you are planning on disturbing the asbestos in any way – for example, making changes to a roof space that has been identified as containing asbestos – the Health and Safety Executive recommend the removal of this hazardous material by trained professionals.
